LEARNING RESULTS

The purpose of the course is for the student to acquire knowledge and familiarity in sociology on health-disease issues, to understand sociological concepts of social effects, perceptions, attitudes, social factors and phenomena that shape the field of health.

Upon successful completion of the course, the student will be able to:

  • to know basic principles and concepts of the sociology of health and issues of the sociological analysis of health
  • to understand the importance of attitudes towards health, but also the importance of the social factors that shape these attitudes
  • to know the social and political factors in the promotion of health or the occurrence and prevention of diseases
  • to know the tools and methodology aimed at the sociological and anthropological approach to health
  •  have the skill to work autonomously and/or within the interdisciplinary team to control the social parameters related to the formation of health levels and the occurrence of disease
  • have the skill to provide counseling, health and health education, taking into account the social influences that health receives, thus increasing the effectiveness of his/her planned activities
  •  have the skill to discern the connection of the health/illness dichotomy to society
  • to develop critical thinking in the connection cultural norms-social groups, age, gender, education with health and illness as well as with individual behaviors and collective action
  • to know the approaches, attitudes and procedures in the field of Public Health in today’s societies
  • know the concepts of chronic illness and disability as well as the relationship between years of illness, disability and stigma
  • to have the skill to sociologically understand modern forms of health
  • have the skill to understand the changes in health processes due to globalization

COURSE CONTENT
General introduction to Sociology and Sociology of Health-Illness
Interconnection of Sociology and health sciences (points of common interest, goals, attitudes, interaction)
Social environment and health
Social inequalities and health (gender, age, educational and economic level, information-updating, etc.)
Attitudes towards health-illness and family disruption (cultural norms and risk behaviours, population beliefs and attitudes etc.
The social work of health scientists (expectations, conflicts, obstacles in the relationship between health scientist and client)

 

 

STUDENT EVALUATION

Written/Oral final exam (100%) including:

Multiple choice questions
Short answer questions
