LEARNING OUTCOMES

The aim of the course is to provide students with knowledge about modern sociological theories of social inequality, stratification, the role of social policy, the creation and / or alleviation of inequalities, poverty and social exclusion.

Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to:

  • understand, analyze and compare basic concepts in the field of social stratification and inequality
  • understand and apply classical and modern theoretical approaches to social inequality
  • understand the meaning, factors and consequences of social exclusion
  • distinguish and understand the multidimensional nature of social exclusion and social inequality, in relation to social variables such as social class, gender, race, power, prestige and nationality
  • understand the structural factors that shape, reproduce and reinforce inequalities and exclusion in modern societies
  • distinguish ways to combat social inequality and social exclusion through the implementation of public policies
  • distinguish and understand the multidimensional nature of social exclusion and social inequality, in relation to work, income, health, education, standard of living, gender relations, child rights
  • recognize and understand the consequences of social inequalities
