LEARNING OUTCOME
After completion of the course students will be able to:
- Know Tropical Diseases and the countries they are endemic in.
- Know which diseases are labeled “neglected diseases” and the factors that favor their spread in places of low income.
- Know the natural history, the ways of transmission, and transmissibility of Tropical Diseases along with international initiatives and programs for their containment and eradication.
- Be able to participate in international missions with Public Health as their objective, in areas endemic for Tropical Diseases, having as their goal to fight off epidemics and to promote Public Health.
- Understand the dangers of both infectious and non-infectious source that are related to travels.
- Know the basic instructions for travelers, necessary vaccinations, the related/needed medical and pharmaceutical care, general informations for safe water, food environmental dangers and avoiding insect bites.
- Be familiar with using official sites and networks for before and after traveling information searching.
GENERAL SKILLS
The objective of this course is to make the student knowledgeable of the problems Tropical Diseases create and able to:
- Research, analyze, and synthesize data and information.
- Adapt to new situations
- Make fast decisions on controlling disease strategy
- Work in an international environment during pandemics or/and local epidemics.
- Working in an interdisciplinary environment
- Create and manage programs and workings
- Respect the diversity and multicultural diversity of people affected by Tropical Diseases.
- Show social, professional and moral responsibility and sensitivity in matters of gender connected with the “neglected diseases”.
CORSE CONTENT
- Introduction to Tropical Diseases: Definition, geographical allocation, “negelected diseases”, international programs to fight tropical diseases off.
- Malaria
- Viral Infections: Arbovirus infections (Yellow fever, Dengue, Zika, Chikungunya),
- Hemorrhagic fevers (Ebola, Lassa, Marburg, Crimean-Congo, Machupo).
- Bacterial infections: Plague (Pox?), Cholera, Hanssen’s disease, Tuberculosis
- Parasitic infections: cutaneous/visceral leishmaniasis, schistosomiasis, trypanosomiasis, filariasis.
- Travelers’ Health
- Travelers’ vaccines, drugs for malaria prevention
- Travelers’ diarrheaand instructions for water and food
- Travelers and travel safety – dangers of non-infectious reasons
- Mission to the Tropics: Preparation and return.
STUDENT EVALUATION
- Assessment in Greek language
- Written final examination in Tropical diseases with multiple choice questions.
- For Travel Medicine the final examination includes presentation/written paper. Students are called to prepare a traveler for a specific location.
- In assessment, completion of given answer, clarity, degree of critical thinking and language proficiency are taken into consideration.
- Separate grades are added up, to produce the final grade of the student.
