LEARNING RESULTS

The Basic Epidemiology course provides a thorough introduction to epidemiology as the basic science concerned with the study of the distribution of various diseases and/or characteristics in human ‘populations’, as well as with the investigation of causal factors that shape or can influence these the allocations.

Upon successful completion of the course, the student will have understood the basic concepts of epidemiology as well as the basic principles and methods of descriptive and analytical epidemiology. Particularly:

  • who has understood the objects of epidemiology and its uses in public health
  • will have understandings of the concepts of cause, effect and statistical correlation
  • will know the sources of epidemiological data and be able to search for, evaluate and use epidemiological data
  • will understand the concepts of incidence and prevalence and be able to estimate morbidity and mortality rates. In addition, you will understand the concept of prototyping and become familiar with the processes of direct and indirect prototyping.
  • will understand the basic principles of descriptive epidemiological studies and become familiar with the development of relevant protocols
  • will acquire the ability to formulate causal hypotheses
  • will understand the basic principles of analytical epidemiological studies and become familiar with the development of relevant protocols
  • will understand the characteristics of analytical epidemiological designs, their advantages, disadvantages and be able to identify and recognize them appropriately.
The laboratory part of the course will include further familiarizing students with the concepts and methods, while enabling them to choose the methods to be applied against, as well as to recognize their advantages and limitations.
