LEARNING OUTCOMES
The course is a specialty course which refers to subjects of Hygiene and Epidemiology that are related to the place of Hospital.
The syllabus includes the Sanitary Provisions in which the license of the establishment and operation of medical institutions are based on, clues of the building complex, and as well as the competences of the Public Health Supervisor in the hospitals and the manner of exercising of Sanitary Control.
Furthermore it analyzes the parameters and the factors of the cause and the control of Hospital Infections (e.g. Hand hygiene of medical stuff, disinfectants and antiseptics use policy, food collection and storage conditions, the way of management of hazardous medical wastes and the clean clothing)..
Finally, the aim of the course is students to acquire knowledge and skills in subjects of Hospital Hygiene, which they will make them capable of contributing effectively in the protection of health and in safety of Patients and Employees in Nursing Institutions, but also in general in the defense of Public Health.
Upon completion of the course, students will be able :
- To know and apply the Health Provisions that is effective in to Nursing Institutions.
- To assess and evaluate the operating conditions of various departments and services related to their objects (e.g. the use of disinfenctants and antiseptics, the operation of central sterilization , the operating conditions of laundries and kitchens, medical waste management).
- To capture the current situation and make intervention proposals.

THEORETICAL PART OF THE COURSE
- Definition of Hospital Infections (N.I)
- Basic knowledge of the Epidemiology of H.I, sources and routes of transmission of H.I
- Infection indicators
- Epidemiological Surveillance, Control Committees of H.I
- Epidemic and Endemic H.I
- Antimicrobial resistance in antibiotics and antibiotics use policy in Hospital
- Hand Hygiene of Medical and Nursing Staff
- Sterilization and Disinfection methods in Hospital
- Epidemiology and prevention of the transmission in the Hospital diseases which are being transmitted by blood and biological fluids
- Epidemiology and prevention of the transmission in the Hospital diseases which are being transmitted by endovascular devices
- Management of dirty clothing in Hospital
- Surgical Trauma Infections, Nosocomial Urinary Tract Infections, Nosocomial Pneumonias
- Food infections in the Hospital
- Vaccination needs of Employees
LABORATORY PART OF THE COURSE
- Sanitary provisions under which the establishment and the operation of Nosocomial institutions are granted
- Responsibilities of the Public Health Inspector in the Hospitals and the way of exercising Health Control
- Elements of a building complex
- Health and Safety Programs in Nursing Institutions
Educational Visits in Nursing Institutions for the:
- Assessment of disinfectant and antiseptic use policy in the Hospital
- Assessment of the operating conditions of the central sterilization
- Assessment of the operating conditions of the washing machines
- Assessment of the food reception and preservation conditions
- Assessment of the operating conditions of the kitchens
- Assessment of the management condition of unclean and clean clothing
- Assessment of the way washing – antiseptic of the hands and use of gloves
- Assessment of the cleaning way of building structures
- Assessment of the management manner of Medical Waste
STUDENT EVALUATION
The evaluation is in Greek Language.
THEORETICAL PART OF THE COURSE
The evaluation of the theoretical part is done with a written examination at the end (80% of the grade) of the semester, which includes short development questions and multiple-choice questions.
When the subjects are given to the students, they will be also informed about how topic will be evaluated depending on their degree of difficulty. The assessment takes into account the completeness of the answer, the clarity, the degree of critical thinking of the student and the language proficiency.
Writing and presentation of works (20%).
Participation in the final assessment is made known to the student from the beginning of the semester.
LABORATORY PART OF THE COURSE
Written final exam (60%) which includes:
- Multiple-choice questions
- Short development questions
- Solve problems related to quantitative data in a short case study
Interim evaluations (40%) which includes:
- Presentation of team project
- Problem solving: Role analysis and scope in a brief case study
Participation in the final assessment exam and in interim evaluations is made known to the student from the beginning of the semester.
