LEARNING RESULTS

After the successful completion of the course the students will:

  • know the basic principles of Medical Entomology
  • be able to design and implement integrated pest management programs
  • have basic knowledge of insect anatomy and physiology
  • be able to recognize insects of health importance, insects of stored products, wood-eating insects and other insects found in the natural environment (order, family, genus, species)
  • be able to perform autopsies and identify the insect species
  • be able to choose the appropriate formulation and method/technique when applying pest control per case
  • be able to provide advice and recommended preventive measures.
  • be aware of the modern active substances used as well as how to use the equipment associated with pest control applications.
  • know and be able to apply all protection measures and follow all guidelines for the safe use of biocides.

 

GENERAL SKILLS

After the successful completion of the course the student will be able to:

  • search, analyze and synthesize data and information, using the necessary modern tools and technologies related to the latest developments in integrated insect management programs, new control methods and modern formulas
  • adapt to new situations, such as the appearance of insects that have not been detected before in the Greek territory, and whose presence may pose a risk to Public Health
  • choose the most appropriate insect control method by physical, chemical and mechanical means or sanitation methods
  • work autonomously in situations related to performing an autopsy in order to recognize-identify-control unwanted insects
  • work in teams and interdisciplinary in integrated insect management programmes at national or regional level
  • design and conduct integrated pest control programs
  • respect the natural environment by properly managing biocides (storage, use, disposal)

Theoretical Course Part

  • Introduction to Medical Entomology. General characteristics of invertebrates. Classification of invertebrates. The most important groups of arthropods & insects
  • Anatomy-Physiology-Reproduction of insects. The most important groups of arthropods & insects of public health importance
  • Insects of Public Health Importance*
  • Cockroaches-Mosquitoes-Sand Flies-Cories-Fleas-Lice-Crotons
  • Stinging insects (Hymenoptera)*: Wasps-Bees, Ants
  • Wood-eating Insects*: Termites- Wood-Boring Beetles
  • Stored Products Pests-Acari*
  • Occasional Invaders*: Diplopods-Chilopods, red palm weevil, Clothes Moths

Laboratoty Course Part

  • Introduction to Medical Entomology. Systematic classification of insects. Using insect-key (Exercise)
  • Anatomy-Physiology-Reproduction of insects. Recognition of anatomical characteristics of insects, external morphology and organs (legs, wings, antennae, buds, oral molecules). Classification of insects based on their growth cycle. (Exercise)
  • Introduction to Insect Control – Modern Active Substances & Preparations – Forms of Preparations – Label Analysis – Right Selection and Use of Equipment and PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) – Search of Preparations Licenses for Preparations and MSDS – Preparation of Solutions-Dosage-Mixes (Exercise)
  • Documentation of Pest Control Applications – Files of Pest Control
  • Insects of Public Health Importance*: Cockroaches-Mosquitoes-Sand Flies-Bed Bugs-Fleas-Lice-Ticks (Exercises)

STUDENT EVALYATION

The evaluation language is Greek.

Theoretical part of course

The evaluation of the theoretical part is done by written examination at the end of the semester, which includes short text questions and multiple-choice questions.

For the successful follow-up of the theoretical part, the  examination score should be at least five (5,0)

Laboratory part of course

The final score is shaped from the set of three (3) evaluation-examination modes.

  • Laboratory Exercises 25%. Each laboratory exercise examines the subject matter of the previous course. The exercise may include identification, control based on a specific scenario, etc.
  • Intermediate Assessment 25% (Sample Identification, Multiple Choice – Matching Test – True/False)
  • Final Evaluation 50% (Sample Identification, Multiple Choice – Matching Test – True/False)

All students have access to the corrected laboratory exercises as well as to the writings of the Intermediate and Final Evaluation.

In the first lesson, students are informed in writing about the program of the workshop to be followed per week. They are also verbally informed about their assessment procedure and the maximum number of absences they can have.
