LEARNING OUTCOMES

The aim of the course is to acquire the necessary skills to be able to identify and control the risk factors of a workplace (physical, chemical, and ergonomic) and to evaluate and improve the signaling and prevention systems (technical and individual). After the end of the course students will be able to:

  • assess occupational hazards (risk outcomes, importance of prevention, general principles of prevention, risk management)
  • recognize the concept of accident at work and occupational disease (announcement, investigation, and recording)
  • identify the principle of employer liability, criminal and administrative sanctions and thebasic Legislative framework for the safety and health of workers
  • to control and implement the minimum standards of workplaces in accordance with the ΠΔ. 16/96 with evaluation of the necessary natural working factors
  • delimit the obligations and duties of the safety technician and the occupational physician
  • organize actions and training in case of emergency (fire, earthquake, accident, etc.)
  • to create jobs with ergonomic arrangements and protection of young, pregnant, lactating and nursing workers

 

GENERAL SKILLS

Upon successful completion of the course the student will be able to:

  • seeks, analyzes, and composes data and information, using the necessary technologies in the field of prevention and implementation of health and safety measures for workers at occupational hazards
  • make decisions and respect diversity and multiculturalism through prudential checks
  • performs autonomous work through the implementation of Health inspections, reports and expertise
  • makes decisions through the Provision of consulting services in matters of quality assurance, hygiene, and food safety of food businesses
  • designs and manages HACCP and ISO quality programs
  • promotes free, creative, and inductive thinking through Teaching at all levels of Education on Personal, Public and Social Hygiene and Environmental Hygiene.

Theoretical Part of the Course

  • Introduction to the concepts of Health & Safety and Industrial Hygiene
  • Impact of work on health and health at work
  • Legal framework for occupational safety
  • Obligations and duties of Safety Technician and Occupational Physician
  • Occupational risks (definition, classification, Occupational Risk assessment)
  • Accidents at work (definition, causes, prevention, announcement, statistics, costs)
  • Principles of Ergonomics
  • Musculoskeletal disorders
  • Effects of Natural Factors on Health
  • Effects of Chemical Factors on Health
  • Working hours
  • Mobbing Syndrome and Burn out Syndrome
  • Sources of information on Occupational Health and Safety

LaboratoryPart of the Course

  • The laboratory part of the course includes (simulation exercises and on paper):
  • Information resources on Occupational Health and Safety (training in the use of relevant search engines)
  • Workplace specifications
  • Workplace Configuration-Job configuration (techniques)
  • Occupational hygiene (identification and configuration of sanitary facilities within the company)
  • Measurement of Natural Working Factors (microclimate-noise-vibrations-lighting)
  • Industrial ventilation (analysis-section measurement)
  • Electric shock
  • Fire safety-fire protection (demonstration by a member of the Fire Service)
  • PPE (demonstration of laboratory equipment)
  • Signage (space organization)

Educational visits for:

  • Evaluation and recording of specifications and configuration of workplaces and configuration of workplaces
  • Assessment and recording of natural workplace factors
  • Assessment and recording of ergonomic principles and workplace marking

 

STUDENT EVALUATION

The evaluation is in Greek language.

Theoretical part of the lesson

The evaluation of the theoretical part is done with a written examination at the end of the semester, which includes short development questions and multiple-choice questions.

For successful completion of the theoretical part the examination grade should be at least five (5.0)

Laboratory part of the lesson

Written final exam (60%) which includes:

  • Multiple-choice questions
  • Short development questions
  • Solve problems related to quantitative data in a short case study

Interim evaluations (40%)

  • Presentation of team project
  • Problem solving: Role analysis and scope in a brief case study
