LEARNING OUTCOMES

The course aims to introduce students to the meaning phenomena related to air pollution, noise pollution, radioactivity, the management and disposal of solid waste, be aware of the consequences and evaluate their response measures. Even to acquire skills on measuring environmental parameters and design of air emissions abatement equipment.

After the end of the course students will be able to:

  • Indicate usual solid waste management methods and propose solutions to issues concerning the collection, transportation and disposal of solid waste and industrial waste
  • Indicate the major air pollutants, the effects of their presence, forms and causes of air pollution
  • Propose methods of pollution control and handle basic air pollution measuring instruments
  • Understand the characteristics of noise, measure the noise level and evaluate noise reduction measures

Know the basics radioactivity units, the effects of exposure to radioactive materials and to determine the level of radioactive materials and  environmental radioactivity

GENERAL SKILLS

  • Autonomous work on issues related to waste management, air pollution, noise, environmental radioactivity
  • Teamwork to determine parameters of air pollutants and measuring environmental noise
  • Decision-making on issues related to atmospheric environment management, noise protection, proper waste management, recycling and radiation protection
  • Planning and management of solid waste disposal projects
  • Respect the natural environment through the use of experimental devices for measuring air pollutants from central heating burners and internal combustion engines, noise and radioactivity of food
  • Search, analysis and synthesis of data and information, using the necessary technologies and issues related to decontamination, sound insulation-noise protection, reduction of soil pollution , decontamination mining waste

STUDENT EVALUATION

Evaluation in Greek language

Theory

During the lectures the scope of this course is analyzed. At the end of each lecture the main points are emphasized.

At the end of the semester the evaluation is based 100% on a written final exam that requires short analysis on several topics and occasional problem solving.

Passing mark is 5/10.

Laboratory

During the laboratory, students are divided into groups and perform specific laboratory exercises. Before performing the exercise there is an analysis of the theoretical background, presentation of the instruments, utensils, chemicals to be used and the course of the exercise summarized. Students record and present the results.

Also, in the laboratory part includes site visits to landfill, mechanical recycling and composting plant, soil rehabilitation sites.

The evaluation of the laboratory part is done by:

Final written exam at the end of the semester (50%)

Interim written reviews after educational visits (30%)

Projects after completion of laboratory exercises (15%)

Daily evaluation during the laboratory exercises (5%)

For the successful completion of the workshop part a weighted average must be at least five (5.0)
