Research fields and interests
Dr. Ioannis Papadas is an Enviromental Engineer and an Assistant Professor at the Department of Public & Community Health, School of Public Health at the University of West Attica in Greece. His research revolves around the development and thorough characterization of nanostructured semiconductor materials for applications in photocatalysis and photovoltaics. A key element of his research is the development of semiconductor nano-dimensional materials which absorb electromagnetic radiation in the ultraviolet and/or visible region spectrum and convert it into chemical energy with high yield and chemical stability, as well as low production costs. Specifically, his research activities focus on the development of innovative semiconductor inorganic nanomaterials which aim at the photochemical conversion of solar energy through photocatalytic water splitting and photo-induced degradation of organic pollutants and toxic heavy metals aiming to protect the aquatic environment. For instance, the photocatalytic water splitting to molecular hydrogen production is one of the most promising methods for the photochemical production of solar fuels. He has participated as a researcher in several EU, national and regional projects like PENED 2003 (2006-2009), THALIS (2011-2015), ERC Starting Grant (2012-2015), IKY (2015-2016), ERC Consolidator Grant (2016-2020) and Horizon 2020 (2020-2021), in activities that are related to the objectives of these projects.
Academic publications
Dr. Ioannis Papadas has published >50 scientific articles in refereed international journals most of them in highly cited journals and more than 15 papers of these have been published in IF>8.5 journals, which are related to his main field of interests, including Advanced Materials, Applied Catalysis B: Environmental, ACS Catalysis, Chemisty Materials, Nanoscale, Chem. Eur. J. and J. Mater. Chem. A. and have been delivered in over 40 presentations in Greek national and international conferences and meetings. Based on Google Scholar data on Dec.2023, the total citation number of his papers is over >1900 with h-index of 23 and a total impact factor over 250.
Teaching experience
His teaching experience includes theoretical and practical laboratory work in undergraduate and post-graduate courses in Environmental Engineering and technology as well as Material Science, which include subjects such as Environmental Chemistry, Wastewater Treatment, Materials Science and Engineering, Health and Safety Management System etc.
He has also supervised more than 15 M.Sc. students working towards their postgraduate thesis in the M.Sc. Programme of Waste Water Management, Hellenic Open University, Greece, as well as more than 10 post-graduate students in the M.Sc. Programme of Environmental Communication and Health Promotion of the Department of Public & Community Health, School of Public Health at the University of West Attica. In addition, he has trained and supervised more than 5 undergraduate students guiding them towards the completion of their undergraduate thesis of the Department of Public & Community Health, School of Public Health at the University of West Attica, Greece.
