Mr. Georgios Zakynthinos is Professor of the Department of Public and Community Health at University of Western Attica with subject “Technology Safety and Development of Functional Foods and Health-protective Products in Public Health”

Studies
He is graduate of the AGRICULTURAL UNIVERSITY OF ATHENS and has completed Postgraduate Specializations in Greek (Agricultural University of Athens, Mediterranean Agricultural Institute of Chania) and in International Institutions (Davis UNIVERSITY USA, INRA of France, IRTA of Spain, CIHEAM of Zaragoza, INIA of Portugal) as a scholarship with subjects Agriculture and Rural Development, Agricultural Applications, Biotechnology, Molecular Techniques in Plant Breeding& Genetic Improvement and Horticulture Biology and Technology.
He holds a PhD in Agricultural Sciences with honors and has carried out two postdoctoral projects (2001-2010) in Plant Physiology and Morphology Laboratory, at Department of Agricultural Biotechnology of the Agricultural University of Athens and at the Plant Breeding Laboratory of the Department of Crops Science of the same University.
Experience
He is teaching in the Department of Public and Community Health the courses Food Hygiene, Assurance Systems and of Food Quality Management and Special Topics in Food Microbiology
He has taught for over 18 years various lessons on Human Nutrition, Food Product Development, Food Law, Technology and Quality of Fruits & Vegetables, Technology and Quality of Olives, Fats & Oils.
His Research objects are: the development of pharmaceuticals based on natural products and food, the phytochemicals of fruits, medicinal plants vegetables as food supplements, food supplements, growth of innovative food products, the quality and technology of olive and vine fruit and vegetables, and he holds three nutraceutical patents. He has professional experience of more than twenty-eight years (28) in coordination and management of various research projects international, national, private as well.
The responsibility positions where he served were important
- He was head (R&D) of Private Company Biotechnology managing more than eleven (11) billion $ as total budget research projects
- Consultant to the Ministry of Agricultural Development and Foods, he was coordinating for four (4) years thematic committees on organic farming, biotechnology, GMOs, CAP environmental management and crisis
- Management Consultant for six (6) years at Protected Management Body of National Park with duties on START UP
- He was Head of the Academic Departments at University of Peloponnese for more than nine (9)
His Published work has received international recognition and includes: papers – published articles in international and national journals, books and indexed international articles in collective international or national volumes. The whole publishing work is supplementing by extensive specialized and popular periodical articles hip conventional and electronic with subject’s food technology, human nutrition, nutraceuticals and functional foods.
